I've had a discussion with my mentor, who is also the partner on the job for this insurance client in Cyberjaya. I made it clear to him that my passion for work is large scale delivery work, and in this Cyberjaya client, making me do programme management work, although I can do it, is quite blase to me.
I also shared the fact that I'm considering moving away from this firm, but because I have spent 13 years in this firm, moving away is emotional. We spoke about promotion to the next stage, but honestly, on the project I am on, with so many other senior managers around, moving up is not gonna be easy. At best, unless a miracle happens, I am only shooting for promotion in 2007. That's a long time to wait to get the moolah I was talking about.. so, if you ask me, the pendulum has swung back again...

I understand. I have also considered what you have said for long. But the firm I work for places quite a lot of importance on numbers, and because a lot of the projects have a lot of senior managers, worst still, there are a lot of partners too, moving up is difficult unless some of the partners themselves move.
And the firm gives u a set time to make it, if not out you go. I believe I have a couple more years to go. Now, ideally, I want to make it next year, but looking at how things are, and the fact that there are a lot of other senior people on my project, it's one political mess.. so my chances of making it in Sept 06 is limited.
2007 is a better target, but again it depends on 2006. I need 2 years of continuous targets. 2004 for me was a good year. 2005, not so good. 2006 will be crappy. Unless I hit some big time USD10M job in 2007, it's also unlikely.
It's how the firm works. The firm rewards numbers, not skills, not ability to execute.
If i believe I cannot make it in 2007, I might as well go now, try to make it somewhere else.
I've discussed possibilities of coming back. It's an option, that's why I have resisted going to a competitor.
